apparently this was one of the best albums of the year when it came out, and after this album these guys blew up. i actually listened to their first album "mercurial world" when it came out, but i never kept up with them, so i don't think i have og fan status. anyway, even though the style of music isn't really my thing, it is pretty awesome. it's produced very well, there's a lot of cool electronic synthy sounds, and a lot of cool uses of sound effects. (tape player sounds at the start of the album, storm sounds on "angel on a satellite.") i don't know who plays bass on this album, but holy shit if they aren't one of the, smoothest, grooviest, sexiest bassists i've ever heard. it's hard to critique this album properly, since i didn't really dislike anything, but there are elements throughout the album that i wish there were more of; the guitar solos were real nice, but there's only like two of them. on the opening track, "she looked like me!" there's some awesome background vocals that almost sound like screamo or something, but that's the only place it shows up! really, this album is just really good, but not my taste, which leaves me yearning when i hear the elements of genres that are my taste
